Etimologia


Il nome del genere deriva dal greco μεσημβρία "mezzogiorno" e ἄνθεμον "fiore". In italiano mesembriantemo (termine poco utilizzato).[2]


Distribuzione e habitat


Il genere esprime la maggiore biodiversità in Sudafrica, in particolare nella regione del Karoo, ma è presente con alcune specie anche nel bacino del Mediterraneo, in Sud America e in Australia.[3]

In Italia sono presenti Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum e Mesembryanthemum cordifolium.[4]

Mesembryanthemum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Aizoaceae; like many members of this family, it is characterized by long-lasting flower heads. Flowers of Mesembryanthemum protect their gametes from night-time dews or frosts but open in sunlight. There is an obvious evolutionary advantage to doing this; where sun, dew, frost, wind or predators are likely to damage exposed reproductive organs, closing may be advantageous during times when flowers are unlikely to attract pollinators. It is indigenous to southern Africa.

Solo 105 de estas especies son aceptadas, pues unas cuantas han sido trasladadas a otros géneros como Carpobrotus y Delosperma, y la mayoría de las otras son especies taxonómicamente discutidas.[1]
