Descrizione
Raggiunge una lunghezza massima di 9 cm[2]. I maschi sono color oro con una striscia blu che va dalla coda all'occhio, mentre le femmine sono grigie con la stessa striscia. Entrambi i sessi possiedono alcune macchie rosse sulla punta della coda.[senza fonte]
Distribuzione e habitat
Questa specie è endemica del Madagascar orientale, più esattamente del fiume Mananjary e dei suoi tributari[2].
Il suo habitat sono le acque calme e ombreggiate dei torrenti[2].
Biologia
Vive in gruppetti di individui della stessa taglia. I giovanili stazionano appena sotto la superficie dell'acqua mentre gli adulti preferiscono acque un po' più profonde[2].
Acquariofilia
È talvolta allevata negli acquari dove è però molto più comune l'affine B. madagascarensis, con cui è spesso confusa[3].
Conservazione
È minacciata dalle modificazioni dell'habitat (captazioni dei ruscelli e disboscamento) e dall'introduzione di specie aliene[1].

The red-tailed silverside, or zona (Bedotia geayi) is a species of Madagascar rainbowfish endemic to the Mananjary River drainage in Madagascar. It is threatened by habitat loss and introduced species.[1] It has often been confused with the related B. madagascariensis, which is common in the aquarium trade.[3][4] In addition to meristics, the two can be separated by the exact colour pattern on their tail fin (males of both typically have red in the tail) and the distinct red spot on the lower jaw of breeding male B. geayi (lacking in B. madagascariensis).[3][4] B. geayi was described in 1907 by Jacques Pellegrin from a type collected by the pharmacist and natural history collector Martin François Geay (1859-1910), who Pellegrin honoured with its specific name.[5][es] Bedotia geayi
