Descrizione
Produce lunghe foglie strette e coriacee e fiori bianchi a forma di stella con stami gialli. I semi sono muniti di ganci, favorendo così la dispersione da parte degli animali.
Biologia
La pianta è sempreverde e simile ad altri membri della sua famiglia è in grado di esprimere un alto livello o tolleranza nei confronti dell'essiccamento e persino un lungo trattamento con acido solforico in condizioni asciutte le consente di rianimare e riavviare le sue capacità fotosintetiche.[2]
Distribuzione e habitat
Il suo areale è limitato ai Monti Drakensberg nelle province di Mpumalanga e KwaZulu-Natal[3]

Xerophyta elegans is a species of plants in the family Velloziaceae. It is endemic to South Africa and its natural distribution and habitat is restricted to Drakensberg Mountains in Mpumalanga province. The plant is evergreen and similar to other members of its family it is able to express high level or tolerance against desiccation and even long treatment with sulphuric acid[7] under dry conditions leaves it able to revive and restart its photosynthetic abilities. Talbotia produces narrow but long, leathery leaves and white star-shaped flowers with yellow stamens. The seeds are hooked thus enhancing dispersal by animals.- [it] Xerophyta elegans
