Ce sont de très grandes plantes herbacées rhizomateuses des zones tropicales de Malaisie.


Étymologie


Le nom vient du genre Joinvillea donné en hommage à François d'Orléans, Prince de Joinville (1818–1900), frère du roi Louis Philippe de France. En tant qu'amiral de la marine française, il fut chargé d'acheminer la dépouille de Napoléon de Sainte-Hélène à Paris en 1840[1].


Classification


En classification classique de Cronquist (1981)[2] cette famille était dans l'ordres des Restionales.

La classification phylogénétique APG II (2003)[3] et la classification phylogénétique APG III (2009)[4] situent maintenant cette famille dans l'ordre des Poales.

The Joinvilleaceae are a family of flowering plants with a single genus including four species.[2] The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, 1998) assigns it to the order Poales in the clade commelinids in the monocots. The family consists of one genus with four currently accepted species, distributed from the Malay Peninsula to the Caroline Islands and high islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is evolutionarily significant as a relictual group closely related to grasses. They closely resemble large grass plants, in both general appearance and microanatomy, but possess fleshy fruits.

Son plantas parecidas a pastos, robustas, con hojas plicadas e inflorescencias terminales en forma de panículas, con flores pequeñas, perfectas, amarronadas. La familia fue reconocida por sistemas de clasificación modernos como el sistema de clasificación APG III (2009[2]) y el APWeb (2001 en adelante[3]), en los que consta de un único género, Joinvillea, con 4 especies.
