Gorynychus (il cui nome fa riferimento al drago a tre teste Zmey Gorynych [Змей Горыныч] dalla mitologia russa) è un genere estinto di terapside vissuto nel Permiano centrale in quella che oggi è Kotelnich, in Russia. Il genere comprende due specie, la specie tipo G. masyutinae[1][2] e G. sundyrensis.

Descrizione
La specie, nota solo per il suo olotipo, era all'incirca della taglia di un lupo e sembrerebbe essere stato il più grande predatore della fauna di Kotelnich. Come molti theriodonti, presenta canini molto sviluppati e prominenti.[1]
Paleoecologia
La scoperta di un grande terocefalo, che rappresentava il superpredatore del suo habitat, e del piccolo gorgonopside notturno Nochnitsa, nella stessa formazione indica che all'epoca si stava verificando un turnover faunistico, in cui i terocefali stavano pian piano soppiantando i gorgonopsidi come superpredatori del loro ambiente.[2]

Gorynychus est un genre éteint de grands thérapsides thérocéphales basaux ayant vécu à la fin du Permien moyen (Capitanien supérieur) et/ou au début du Permien supérieur (Wuchiapingien inférieur) dans ce qui est aujourd'hui la Russie européenne. Le taxon est nommé ainsi d'après le dragon à trois têtes de la mythologie slave Zmey Gorynych. L'espèce type, Gorynychus masyutinae, est décrite en 2018 à partir de fossiles découverts dans la localité de Kotelnitch, dans l'oblast de Kirov. Une deuxième espèce, Gorynychus sundyrensis, a été décrit en 2019 à partir de fossiles découvert dans la république des Maris.- [it] Gorynychus
