Synanthedon myopaeformis

La Sésie du pommier (Synanthedon myopaeformis) est une espèce de lépidoptères (papillons) de la famille des Sesiidae, dont la chenille se développe dans le tronc de certains arbres fruitiers de la famille des Rosacées. Ce ravageur s'attaque surtout aux arbres dépérissants.

Description

L'imago est un papillon de 25 mm d'envergure environ, au corps sombre (bleu noirâtre) marqué d'une bande rouge sur le premier segment du thorax. La larve est une chenille de 25 mm de long environ, au corps gris clair et à la tête brune.

Biologie

La chenille s'attaque aux Rosacées arbustives et notamment le Pommier, le Poirier, le Cognassier, le Sorbier (Sorbus) et l'Aubépine (Crataegus). Elle se localise dans le tronc et y creuse des galeries sous-corticales profondes atteignant 20 à 25 mm et entamant la couche libérienne.

Synanthedon myopaeformis is a moth of the family Sesiidae and the order Lepidoptera. In Europe it is known as the red-belted clearwing and in North America as the apple clearwing moth. The larvae create galleries under the bark of fruit trees, especially old trees with damaged trunks. During this process, the larvae cause significant damage to host trees. Particular attention has been paid to the damage they cause to apple trees. Their status as a pest of apple orchards has led to many research projects aimed at controlling populations of the moth. This moth is native to Europe, the Near East and North Africa. Recently, the moth was introduced into North America, being first detected in Canada in 2005. There are several organisms that threaten the larvae, including parasitoids, nematodes, and bacteria.[1][2][3]
