Distribuzione e habitat


Questi pesci sono diffusi in tutti gli oceani[1], soprattutto nei mari tropicali e subtropicali. Nel mar Mediterraneo è presente Nemichthys scolopaceus[2]. Hanno costumi mesopelagici e batipelagici[1]


Descrizione


Questi pesci condividono con gli altri Anguilliformes il corpo molto allungato e le pinne dorsale, anale e caudale unite e continue. Il corpo di questi pesci è estremamente allungato e molto fine. Le mascelle sono molto allungate e sottilissime, nella parte distale queste divergono e non sono a contatto nemmeno a bocca chiusa. I denti sono fitti e molto piccoli. Gli occhi sono grandi. Le pinne pettorali sono presenti, così come la linea laterale che è completa e percorre tutto il corpo. L'ano è situato molto in avanti, nei pressi della pinna pettorale. Possiedono vertebre numerosissime (fino a 750), che aumentano di numero durante la vita dell'animale[1][2].

Nemichthys larseni è la specie più grande e supera i 160 cm di lunghezza[3]

Il maschio riproduttivo presenta numerose modificazioni morfologiche come mascelle molto più brevi e senza denti[1].

Snipe eels are a family, Nemichthyidae, of eels that consists of nine species in three genera. They are pelagic fishes, found in every ocean, mostly at depths of 300–600 m (980–1,970 ft) but sometimes as deep as 4,000 m (13,000 ft). Depending on the species, adults may reach 1–2 m (39–79 in) in length, yet they weigh only 80–400 g (2.8–14.1 oz). They are distinguished by their very slender jaws that separate toward the tips as the upper jaw curves upward. The jaws appear similar to the beak of the bird called the snipe. Snipe eels are oviparous, and the juveniles, called Leptocephali (meaning small head), do not resemble the adults but have oval, leaf-shaped and transparent bodies. Different species of snipe eel have different shapes, sizes and colors. The similarly named bobtail snipe eel is actually in a different family and represented by two species, the black Cyema atrum and the bright red Neocyema erythrosoma.
