Strelitzia caudata , communément appelée strelitzia de montagne ou banane sauvage , est une espèce de Strelitzia semblable à la banane originaire d' Afrique.

Répartition

Cette espèce s'étend du Zimbabwe au sud du Mozambique, des provinces du nord de l'Afrique du Sud et d' Eswatini[1].

Historique

 Cette espèce a été décrite pour la première fois en 1946 par Robert Allen Dyer dans Flowering Plants of Africa[2].

Etymologie

L'épithète spécifique caudata signifie haché, il s'agit d'un appendice d'un sépale, qui n'existe que chez cette espèce.  C'est l'une des trois grandes espèces de Strelitzia ressemblant à des bananes, toutes originaires d'Afrique australe, les deux autres étant S. alba et S. nicolai.

Strelitzia caudata, commonly known as the mountain strelitzia or wild banana, is a species of banana-like Strelitzia from Africa from the Chimanimani Mountains of Zimbabwe south to Mozambique, the Northern Provinces of South Africa and Eswatini (Swaziland).[1] It was first described in 1946 by Robert Allen Dyer in Flowering Plants of Africa , Volume 25, Plate 997. The specific epithet caudata means chopped, this refers to an appendage of a sepal, which occurs only in this species.[2][3] It is one of three large banana-like Strelitzia species, all of which are native to southern Africa,[4] the other two being S. alba and S. nicolai.
