Description

Arbre de grande taille des forêts tropicales de basse altitude, atteignant 50 mètres de haut et 220 centimètres de diamètre de tronc. (Un arbre représente 90 à 110 m³ de bois).

Largement exploité pour son bois, les Eusideroxylon sont menacés de disparition du fait de la surexploitation et de la déforestation.

Répartition

Java, Sumatra, Bornéo, Philippines.

Préservation

Interdiction à l'exportation en Indonésie et restriction au Sarawak.

Eusideroxylon is a genus of evergreen trees of the family Lauraceae. The genus is possibly monotypic; it includes one accepted species (E. zwageri) and one that is "unresolved" (E. melagangai).[1] It is present in coastal and montane rainforests of Southeast Asia, and in laurel forest habitat. Eusideroxylon are hardwood trees reaching up to 50 metres in height with trunks over 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) in diameter, producing commercially valuable timber.[citation needed] The wood of E. zwageri (Borneo Ironwood or Belian) is impervious to termites, and can last up to 100 years after being cut.[citation needed] Due to extensive logging, it is listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of IUCN,[citation needed] and conservation efforts are underway, with several countries banning imports.
