It is endemic to Coahuila state in Mexico. Its natural habitat is hot deserts. It is a Critically Endangered species, threatened by habitat destruction.[1]

La mandrágora,[3] biznaguita[1] o palito (Turbinicarpus mandragora) es una especie fanerógama perteneciente a la familia Cactaceae. Tiene forma globosa, mide hasta 5 cm de altura y 6 cm de diámetro. Las flores son hermafroditas, pero requieren del polen de otras plantas para fecundarse, son polinizadas por insectos alados y hormigas,[4] son de color blanco, con una línea media de color rojizo, miden hasta 2 cm de longitud y 2.5 cm de diámetro. Esta especie se reproduce varias veces durante su vida (estartegia de reproducción policárpica), las semillas son dispersadas por animales, el viento y el agua.[4]
