Описание
Придонные рыбы, встречаются на каменистом грунте. Самцы многих видов в период нереста ярко окрашены и резко контрастируют с невзрачно окрашенными самками[1].
Распространение
Ареал охватывает Северную Америку. Большинство видов населяет США, другие встречаются в Канаде и Мексике[2][3].
Классификация
Etheostoma является крупнейшим родом пресноводных рыб Северной Америки и, вероятно отделился от близких родов около 20 млн лет назад[4]. Род подразделяют на 17 или 18 подродов с 126 видами[5][1].
