Paratypothorax est un genre éteint d'aétosaures, découvert dans le Trias supérieur d'Allemagne et des États-Unis.

Le genre n'est connu que par une seule espèce, Paratypothorax andressorum.

Distribution et datation

Il a été nommé en 1985 à partir de restes fossiles découverts dans la formation géologique du Stubensandstein inférieur (Norien) en Allemagne et également dans le sud-ouest des États-Unis, à la fois dans le Groupe Dockum et dans la formation de Chinle, datés respectivement du Carnien terminal et du Rhétien[1]^,[2]. Des fossiles de Paratypothorax ont également été signalés au Groenland dans la formation de Fleming Fjord, datée du Norien[3].

Description

Le genre a été décrit à partir d'ostéodermes, plaques osseuses initialement attribuées au phytosaure Belodon kappfi[4].

Paratypothorax es un género extinto de aetosaurio, del que solo se conoce una especie, Paratypothorax andressi. Fue nombrado originalmente en 1985 a partir de especímenes recolectados en la zona inferior de Stubensandstein en Alemania y también se señaló su presencia en el Grupo Chinle en el suroeste de Estados Unidos en las formaciones Dockum y Chinle, las cuales datan de las etapas del Carniense y el Rhaetiense (Triásico Superior), respectivamente.[1][2] El género fue descrito de osteodermos que inicialmente fueron referidos al fitosaurio Belodon kappfi.[3] Material de Paratypothorax también ha sido reportado de la Formación Fleming Fjord en Groenlandia que data del Noriense.[4]

Paratypothorax (лат.) — род ископаемых архозавров из подотряда этозавров, включающий единственный вид Paratypothorax andressorum, который считается предшественником черепах. Один из древнейших архозавров. Растительноядные этозавры с мощным панцирем были весьма похожи на четвероногих птицетазовых.
