Toxicité
Une centaine d'espèces de cette famille sont toxiques. Ces dernières arborent souvent des couleurs vives qui avertissent de leur toxicité, leurs toxines (produites en fait par les Dinoflagellés ingérés par ces crabes lorsqu'ils s'alimentent) n'étant pas détruites par la cuisson et aucun antidote n'étant connu. Dix espèces sont toxiques à la consommation humaine, dont six hautement mortelles (syndrome paralysant) et quatre modérément[1].

Los xántidos (Xanthidae) es una familia de cangrejos.[1] Son a menudo de colores vivos y son venenosos, conteniendo toxinas que no pueden ser destruidas por cocción y para las cuales no existe antídoto conocido.[2] Las toxinas son similares a la tetradotoxina y saxitoxina producidas por el pez globo, y pueden ser generadas por bacterias del género Vibrio viviendo en si simbiosis con los cangrejos, principalmente la V. alginolyticus y V. parahaemolyticus.[2]- [fr] Xanthidae
